The IEEE RAS Summer School on Soft Manipulation 2017 will last 5 days and includes plenary talks, workshops, poster-and demo sessions, and several possibilities for interaction among the participants. The school aims at teaching a new generation of robotic researchers on the benefits of Soft Manipulation (SoMa). It is the ambition of SoMa to provide the foundations?at the levels of hardware, control, and manipulation planning for a fundamental shift in the way robot manipulation is approached. The summer school will demonstrate that this shift not only leads to a significant increase in competencies, robustness, versatility, and cost-effectiveness of manipulation systems, but also that the resulting technology will be able to address industrial automation problems beyond the capabilities of existing technologies. The school's strong educational program, the venue, the multiple ways of social interaction and the support of IEEE-RAS will greatly benefit a new generation of researchers in this field.

The core of the summer school will be the hands-on workshop and the SoMa-challenge, in which teams of students will optimize the kinematic arrange-ment of soft-robotic fingers to design a hand for exploiting environmental constraints. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate and compare their solutions in the SoMa-challenge and finally, in the demo session, get to know the approaches taken within the SoMa-Project. This multi-day workshop, in combination with the poster-session and the social activities in the evenings, will foster interaction and collaboration among students and thereby lead to a great learning experience. In addition, students will learn about latest results from our current research project on soft manipulation and get in depth knowledge from experts on related fields.
