Minimally invasive surgery has the potential to reduce costs, decrease pain, and shorten hospital stays. Robotics, image-guided interventions, and surgical simulation are key technologies to achieve this potential, and have already formed a corpus of knowledge not available in a single school. The North American Summer School in Surgical Robotics is a biennial school established to bring this knowledge to graduate students and post-docs. The school will be held from 21-25 July 2014 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (PA) USA, in collaboration with West Penn Allegheny Health System. The main objective is to introduce up to 62 trainees (PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) to the multidisciplinary research fields of surgical robotics, image-guided medical interventions, and surgical simulation and training. The intention is to provide lectures, hands-on laboratory experience, and opportunity for informal interaction with clinicians and leading experts from academia and industry. By this approach, we propose to educate trainees in the state of the art and current trends in surgical robotics, image-guided interventions, and surgical simulation. An international faculty of instructors will be specifically recruited for this event.

Our goal for the one-week Summer School is to provide trainees (PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) with lectures, hands-on laboratory experience, introduction to novel technologies and emerging themes, and informal interactions with leading experts. The lectures will be given by internationally-renowned researchers, including several from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and West Penn Allegheny Health System.
