Distinguished Lecturers Program

The Distinguished Lecturer program is aimed at promoting the research areas of the Robotics and Automation Society as identified by its Technical Committees.  There are two ways in which Distinguished  Lecturer requests can be made.

Requests by Chapters for DL Visits

The Distinguished Lecturer mechanism could be especially desirable for locations where people do not usually have the opportunity to invite international speakers or to travel to conferences.  A chapter should identify a Technical Committee for a field for which a DL (or DLs) is desired at any time. A constraint it that the start of this procedure should be initiated at least 6 months ahead of the event for which the DL is desired.  A regular procedure of the request will be the following.

  1. A chapter collaborates with RAS Technical Committee(s) (TC) to make the DL proposal.  The TC is expected to be a consultant of the chapter in this case to make the best event program.  The DL candidate names may be listed  as a tentative plan in the proposal but not guarantee is given those candidates will be chosen. The starting of the procedure should start at least 6 months ahead of time by sending an email to the TC chair and cc to This email address is being protected from spambots. 2. A One Page Proposal should be drafted including information of the event like location, date, purpose, program and contribution of the requestedThe DL proposal is submitted to VPMA, VPTA and This email address is being protected from spambots. 3. VPMA reviews the request in collaboration withThe decision is notified to the chapter by VPMA at least 4 months ahead of time of the event. Necessary modifications of the proposed plan are given at the same time.
  4. The chapter contacts with a DL candidate with the support of the TC(s).
  5. After the event, a report is submitted by the chapter with the TC(s) to VPMA, VPTA and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Note that Distingushied Lecturer Program, Chapter Grant Program and Technical Education Program are not approved at the same time for each chapter so that many chapters are supported by RAS.

Requests by RAS Technical Committees

A Technical Committee can identify one of its members to speak at a particular event or location in order to promote its activities, and transmit this request to the VPTA at any time. There is no restriction on the type of speaking activity other than to be justifiable.  Routine attendance at conferences would ordinarily not be considered, as the intent is to do outreach to non-RAS organizations in order to enhance a Technical Committee's scope.  A regular procedure of the request will be the following.

  1. A One Page Proposal should be drafted including information of the event like location, date, purpose, program and contribution of the requestedTC submits the proposal to VPTA, VPMA and This email address is being protected from spambots. 2. VPTA reviews the request in collaboration withThe decision is notified to the TC by VPTA 4 month before the event at the latest. Necessary modifications of the proposed plan are given at the same time.
  3. The TC contacts with a DL candidate.
  4. After the event, a report is submitted by the TC to VPTA, VPMA and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

The identification of Distinguished Lecturers will be done on a case-by-case basis, and there will not be a fixed pool of Distinguished Lecturers.  Once chosen, the Technical Committee will support the Distinguished Lecturer with materials and technical preparation for the visit. Any problems during the preparation should be communicated to the VPTA and VPMA.

Financial Support for Distinguished Lecturer Visits

The total cost of a Distinguished Lecturer's travel will be supported up to $3,000.  There is no requirement for matching funds in the case of chapter travel.  A request should be made either to the VPMA or to the VPTA as appropriate, and should contain the following information:

  1. A one-page justification for the request.
  2. An approximate budget for travel expenses.

After the travel, the Distinguished Lecturer will provide a one-page report to the VPTA on the results of the visit, and will submit a reimbursement form along with original travel receipts to the RAS Treasurer.

Publications Awards

Recipients of these awards are selected by the editorial boards of the individual publications. Note that K.S. Fu IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation Best Paper Award was withdrawn in 2004 when IEEE-TRA was replaced by the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering.

Awards & Recognition

IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS) is a vibrant society with its members earning accolades in the global technical community. Many RAS members are involved in activities, technical and otherwise, that deserve to be recognized. Therefore you are encouraged to take the time to nominate fellow members for annual awards.

These highly prestigious awards draw nominations from all over the world. RAS recognizes outstanding work by professionals who advance the field through exceptional technical achievement and service to the profession and to society. IEEE Awards are valued as among the highest honors a technical professional can receive.

They are an esteemed symbol of the admiration of one’s peers—the most prized form of prestige—bestowed upon individuals whose accomplishments have enhanced the global economy while improving the quality of daily life. Nominate a colleague today!

RAS strives to maintain a comprehensive set of awards which is representative of member activities. As the field of robotics and automation engineering evolves, so to must our awards. If you would like to suggest new awards, please This email address is being protected from spambots.
