Distinguished Lecturers Program

The Distinguished Lecturer (DL) program is aimed at promoting the research areas of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society as identified by its Technical Committees. The Distinguished Lecturer mechanism is especially desirable for Chapters that do not regularly have the opportunity to invite international speakers or to travel to conferences.

There are three ways in which a Distinguished Lecturer visit can be arranged.

  1. From a Chapter
  2. From a TC
  3. From an RAS Ambassador

A. IEEE RAS Section/Student Branch Chapter - Request for Distinguished Lecturer Visit

This procedure should be initiated at least 6 months prior to the event.

A Chapter identifies one, or more RAS Technical Committees (TC) representing a field for which a DL is desired.

A Chapter representative completes the DL Chapter Visit Form which includes the following:

  • Name of Event
  • Date or Range of Dates for Event
  • Location
  • Topic/Program
  • Estimated Attendance
  • Chapter Type: Section/Student Branch

Once the form is completed and submitted, the DL Coordinator will consider the request, and may request more information. An approved request will be forwarded by the DL Coordinator to the relevant TC co-chair(s).

The TC co-chairs, within 2 weeks, will communicate with the Requesting Chapter Representative, and begin collaborating with the Chapter to secure a Distinguished Lecturer for the Chapter event. The RAS TC is expected to act as a consultant to the RAS Chapter to ensure the best event program.

The Chapter Representative confirms the event (name, date, etc)  with RAS at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

After the event a final report (with photos) must be submitted by the chapter to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Financial Support for Distinguished Lecturer Chapter Visits

The total cost of a Distinguished Lecturer's dedicated travel will be supported up to $3,000 based upon RAS Reimbursement Procedures for Travel and other Expenses.

Please Note: parallel and/or concurrent proposals from a single chapter for Distinguished Lecturer Program, Chapter Grant Program and Technical Education Program may not be approved to allow broad-based support for multiple RAS Chapters.

B. IEEE RAS Technical Committee (TC) Coordination of Distinguished Lecturer Visit

A Technical Committee may identify one of its members to speak at a particular event or location in order to promote the TC’s activities and to do outreach to non-RAS organizations in order to enhance a Technical Committee's scope.

A request of this type can be made at any time.

There is no restriction on this type of speaking activity other than it can be reasonable and justifiable. This program however, is NOT meant for routine attendance at conferences. A regular procedure of the request will be the following. A TC co-chair completes the DL TC Visit Form which includes the following:

  1. Name of Event
  2. Date or Range of Dates for Event
  3. Location
  4. Topic/Program
  5. Estimated Attendance

The identification of Distinguished Lecturers will be done on a case-by-case basis, and there will not be a fixed pool of Distinguished Lecturers.  Once chosen, the Technical Committee will support the Distinguished Lecturer with materials and technical preparation for the visit.

After the event a final report (with photos) must be submitted by the chapter to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

C. IEEE RAS Ambassador Coordination of Distinguished Leader Side Visit

Rather than a dedicated trip, the Detour, or side trip option has potentially lower travel expenses. It is intended to provide both the DL and interested chapters more flexibility in arranging presentations. DL volunteers endorsed by related RAS TCs are encouraged to contact nearby RAS chapters during their personal business trips to make a DL presentation (as a Detour/Side trip) at least one month before the intended presentation.

Either the DL volunteer or the interested RAS chapter can submit a requestfor supporting the side trip.

Publications Awards

Recipients of these awards are selected by the editorial boards of the individual publications. Note that K.S. Fu IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation Best Paper Award was withdrawn in 2004 when IEEE-TRA was replaced by the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering.

Conference Awards

Further to the above Conference awards, the following was discontinued in 2016

Awards & Recognition

IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS) is a vibrant society with its members earning accolades in the global technical community. Many RAS members are involved in activities, technical and otherwise, that deserve to be recognized. Therefore you are encouraged to take the time to nominate fellow members for annual awards.

These highly prestigious awards draw nominations from all over the world. RAS recognizes outstanding work by professionals who advance the field through exceptional technical achievement and service to the profession and to society. IEEE Awards are valued as among the highest honors a technical professional can receive.

They are an esteemed symbol of the admiration of one’s peers—the most prized form of prestige—bestowed upon individuals whose accomplishments have enhanced the global economy while improving the quality of daily life. Nominate a colleague today!

RAS strives to maintain a comprehensive set of awards which is representative of member activities. As the field of robotics and automation engineering evolves, so to must our awards. If you would like to suggest new awards, please This email address is being protected from spambots.
