ICRA 2009 Best Paper Awards

Five of the 696 papers which were accepted for the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (out of 1629 submissions) received the award for Best Paper in six different categories, One paper received two different awards, Best Automation Paper and Best Student Paper. John Hollerbach, ICRA 2009 Awards Chair, announced the names and authors of the winning papers at the awards ceremony in Kobe on May 16. An award was also given for the Best Video, which was selected from the 16 accepted videos out of 36 submissions.
The winning papers and video and their authors are:
- Best Conference Paper: Towards a Navigation System for Autonomous Indoor Flying: Slawomir Grzonka, Giorgio Grisetti, and Wolfram Burgard
- Best Student Paper: Design and Calibration of a Microfabricated 6-Axis Force-Torque Sensor for Microrobotic Applications: Felix Beyeler (student author) , Simon Muntwyler, and Bradley J. Nelson
- Best Automation Paper: Design and Calibration of a Microfabricated 6-Axis Force-Torque Sensor for Microrobotic Applications: Felix Beyeler, Simon Muntwyler, and Bradley J. Nelson
- Best Vision Paper: Moving Obstacle Detection in Highly Dynamic Scenes: Andreas Ess, Bastian Leibe, Konrad Schindler, and Luc Van Gool
- Best Medical Robotics Paper (presented by Michael Koster on behalf of Intuitive Surgical, sponsor): “Real-time Positioning and Tracking Technique for Endovascular Untethered Microrobots Propelled by MRI Gradients”: Ouajdi Felfoul, Eric Aboussouan, Arnaud Chanu, and Sylvain Martel
- KUKA Service Robotics Best Paper (presented by T. Ando, President KUKA – Japan on behalf of KUKA Roboter, Germany): “The ‘DLR Crash Report’ Towards a Standard Crash-Testing Protocol for Robot Safety. Part I: Results, Part II: Discussions”: Sami Haddadin, Alin Albu-Schäffer, Mirko Frommberger, Juergen Rossmann, and Gerd Hirzinger
- Best Video: “Rollin’ Justin - Mobile Platform with Variable Base”: Christoph Borst, Thomas Wimböck, Florian Schmidt, Matthias Fuchs, Bernhard Brunner, Franziska Zacharias, Paolo Robuffo Giordano, Rainer Konietschke, Wolfgang Sepp, Stefan Fuchs, Christian Rink, Alin Abu-Schäffer, and Gerd Hirzinger.
