The IEEE Board of Directors has announced that Professor Toshio Fukuda
of the University of Nagoya, Japan will receive the IEEE Robotics and
Automation Technical Field Award for leadership and pioneering
contributions to Intelligent Robotic Systems and Micro and Nano Robotic
Systems.
Fukuda has been working in the area of intelligent robotic systems
for over 30 years. He and colleagues and students working under his
direction at his University of Nagoya laboratory are recognized for their
intelligent robotics systems including brachiation robots, cellular
robotic systems and in particular, micro-nano robotic systems. His
pioneer work in the micro and nano world include 3D manipulation of the
Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT) for nano sensors and actuators.
Fukuda has served as president of RAS, director of IEEE Division X,
ICRA General Chair (twice), founding chair of IROS, and many other
leadership roles in IEEE and the Robotics Society of Japan. Among other
honors, he was elected IEEE Fellow and received the RAS Pioneer Award,
the Japanese government's Science and Technology Award and was elected to
the Science Council of Japan.
Fukuda will be presented with the Robotics and Automation Field Award at
the Awards Ceremony during ICRA 2010.
