RAS 2007 New Initiatives Grants

In April 2007 the Society was informed by IEEE that $100,000 of unspent funds could be allocated for unbudgeted new initiatives, providing the funds were spent by December 31, 2007. Despite the short notice, we were able to publish a call for proposals to which received 39 responses. IEEE Election Ballots Mailed to Members

IEEE Annual Election ballot packages were mailed to all eligible voting members via first class postal mail. The ballot package includes a paper ballot and a postage paid reply envelope. RAS voting members are eligible to participate annually in election of officers that serve on the top-tier IEEE governing bodies. Professor Kazuo Tanie, 1946-2007

We regret to inform the RAS membership and others in the robotics and automation community that Professor Kazuo Tanie of Tokyo Metropolitan University passed away on June 9. He served as President of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in 2004-5. Professor Tanie received the B.E., M.S., Dr.Eng. degrees in mechanical engineering from Waseda University, Japan, in 1969, 1971, and 1980, respectively. The Robotics and Automation Society membership will be electing six new members of the Administrative Committee in October to serve a three year term beginning in January 2008. As a result of a new IEEE policy that, for the first time, allows RAS to use some of the unspent funds from 2006 in 2007, we are able to consider funding a modest number of initiatives that would benefit society members in general, providing that the initiative can be completed and the funds spent in calendar 2007.
