The recently-founded Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Chapter from São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo (EESC-USP), Brazil, organized starting from 18 September until 27 November the Robotics and Automation Reading Group.
The activity consisted of an one-hour meeting every other week in order to discuss papers in the field of study of robotics, mechatronics and control systems. They took place on one of the lecture rooms of the Mechatronic Engineering building at EESC-USP.There was a total of five meetings with 5-10 people per meeting.
The public consisted of undergraduate students currently working on undergraduate research projects and also Master’s students as well as PhD candidates. Most of them were already RAS Members. The purpose of these meetings were not only to keep up with the state-of-art applications of concepts related to robotics, but also to promote integration between undergraduate and graduate students, as well as providing a place where students currently working on research projects could exchange experience, knowledge and practice their teaching skill, since parts of the paper concepts had to be cleared right before discussing it. The overall feedback from the participants was positive. The event was the first initiative of the EESC-USP RAS Chapter towards the students with some familiarity with research and this attempt was considered a success by its members and participants outside the EESC-USP RAS Chapter. The Reading Group activities resumed in February 2020.
