Biography

Ray Jarvis was born on January 9, 1941 in Rangoon, Burma. He spent his early childhood there until he moved to Australia in 1947. He completed his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Western Australia in 1962 and 1968, respectively. Following graduation, Jarvis spent two years as a visiting professor at Purdue University before returning to the Australian National University, where he helped develop the Computer Science Department. In 1985, he became Chair of the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department at Monash University, where he established the Intelligent Robotics Research Center and became Head of Department from 1987 to 1988. Jarvis has served on several committees and panels, held numerous leadership positions, and been elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1992. His numerous research efforts have led to the publication of over 3000 research papers and several awards, including the Life‐time Achievement Award for leadership, education and pioneering contributions to the field of robotics and automation worldwide from the Australian Robotics & Automation Association which was bestowed posthumously.
