Interview Synopsis

In this interview, Thorpe discusses his initial robotics research at Carnegie Mellon, and how his projects have developed over the years. Specifically, Thorpe focuses on the difficulties of both designing and implementing autonomous vehicles.

Biography

Charles E. “Chuck” Thorpe was born in Michigan and travelled extensively throughout his childhood, including seven years in the Congo where he taught high school classes. He graduated with a B.A. in natural science from North Park College in Chicago and a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. Thorpe was heavily involved in autonomous driving research at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, was a founding dean of Carnegie Mellon’s campus in Qatar, and is currently Senior Vice President and Provost at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.
