ADRIANA TAPUS, France

Adriana Tapus (S’02-GSM’05-M’07) is Full Professor in the Autonomous Systems and Robotics Lab at ENSTA Paris, Institut Polytechnique de Paris, France. She received her PhD in Computer Science from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in 2005. She worked as an Associate Researcher at the University of Southern California, where she was among the pioneers on the development of socially assistive robotics and human-robot interaction. Her main interests are on long-term learning, human modeling, and on-line robot behavior adaptation to external environmental factors. Prof. Tapus is an Associate Editor for International Journal of Social Robotics, ACM Transactions on Human-Robot Interaction, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems, and in the steering committee of several major robotics conferences. She received the Romanian Academy Award for her contributions in assistive robotics in 2010. She was recognized in 2016 as one of the 25 women in robotics you need to know about.

QUALIFICATIONS: In the past 20 years, I have been an active volunteer and served the IEEE RAS. I have also been involved with university programs that promote engineering amongst women scientists and have been recognized in 2016 as one of the leading women researchers of my generation in the field of Robotics. Based on my extensive experience I believe that I am qualified for serving as an AdCom member.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Worked to improve the quality of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) conference since it was started in 2006 through involvement in roles such as TPC, local organizing chair, workshop chair, financial chair, publication chair, program chair, and general chair of the conference. Through my involvement I strived to keep the conference at a high standard.
• Contributed twice as a guest-editor for the IEEE Robotic and Automation magazine
• General Chair for HRI 2019, Daegu, South Korea
• Program Chair for HRI 2018, Chicago, USA

POSITION STATEMENT

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society is the most recognized and respected global organization in Robotics and Automation. It was a pleasure to be involved with IEEE RAS and provide my contribution for almost 20 years now. In joining the RAS AdCom, I will continue to provide my enthusiastic help to the community. I will encourage, initiate, and support innovative education and training programs for existing and new generations of engineers in the RAS community. I will continue to evangelize the principles of RAS and through my affiliations with several universities across Europe, I will help the creation of new chapters in various regions around the world (e.g., Eastern Europe). I will also strive to promote high quality conferences and publications that play a significant role in maintaining high quality and standards of IEEE RAS.

I believe that the women engineers play a critical role in shaping RAS. I am committed to invest in programs that encourage young women to pursue careers in engineering and robotics and promote diversity and inclusion.
