Distinguished Lecturers may be requested by IEEE RAS Section or IEEE RAS Student Branch Chapters. Other groups interested in building relationships with RAS are also welcome to make requests for DLs.
The coordinating committee recommends that requests be planned 4-6 months in advance for in-person events and 3+ months in advance for virtual events.
The requestor is encouraged to identify up to 1-3 potential DLs by preference.
The requestor completes the DL Request Form
Once Request Form is submitted, the DL Coordinator will consider the request, and may seek more information. After a request has been approved, the DL Coordinator will notify the requesting organization and the requested DL. It will then be up to the two parties to coordinate the event — speaking date, travel arrangements, etc.
Once the arrangements are finalized, the requestor must confirm the event by submitting an Approved DL Form.
The requesting organization/chapter must submit a Distinguished Lecture Report within 30 days of the event.
Each TC of RAS nominates three (3) distinguished lecturers (DLs) for their TC, one for each of the 3 geographical regions of RAS. Among 3 DLs, we strongly recommend you to nominate minimum one female DL. Distinguished lecturers should be renowned leading figures in the robotics community, so they can share their knowledge, expertise, and insights into the future of robotics. Rising star researchers can be nominated, if they made significant impact and contributions to the robotics research field and showed professional maturity despite of their young careers.” Nomination link available here.
DLs will serve for terms of three (3) years, which may be renewed once. After serving two consecutive terms, an individual should sit out at least three years before being considered as a DL again. RAS can provide travel support for DLs, up to a maximum of $5000 according to RAS travel reimbursement guidelines.
Each nominee will provide a CV, a biosketch (suitable for posting on the web), a link to a webpage in English, and abstracts of at least one talk that they would be willing to give as a RAS DL.
The nominees will be reviewed by an approval committee including representatives from MAB, TAB, and RAS leadership. The committee will be chaired by the RAS DL Coordinator, and will include the MAB VP, the TAB VP, the RAS president, RAS junior past president, RAS senior past president, and the RAS president-elect.
The term will be updated to three (3) years, which may be renewed once. After serving two consecutive terms (a total of 6 years), an individual should sit out at least three years before being considered as a DL again.
Next term will begin in January 2025 and end December 31, 2027
