BIOGRAPHY

Zhidong Wang received Ph.D from Tohoku University, Japan in 1995. He subsequently spent 11 years at Tohoku University as an assistant professor and associate professor. In 2006, he joined the Chiba Institute of Technology and is currently a professor and head of the Biomimetic Systems Lab. at CIT, Japan. His research interests are human-robot interaction, biomimetic robots, and distributed robotics.

Dr. Wang received the Best Paper Award of DARS conference in 2002, the Best Paper in Robotics Award of ROBIO conference in 2004 and 2019, the Robotics and Mechatronics Award from the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2004, the JSME Award for best paper from the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2005, and the IROS Cyberrobotics Award for Best Paper in Experimental Robotics in 2005, the Best Paper Award of ROBIO conference in 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS

Dr. Wang has served as a member of the RAS, an AdCom member 2015-2017, ExCom member 2018-2021, and Associate VP of CAB on Conference Publication 2016-2021. He played major roles in organizing RAS-sponsored conferences, including the general chair of ICRA2024, and the general chairs and program chairs of several RAS conferences. He also contributed to many IEEE conferences as publication chair, organizing committee chair, etc, in the last 25 years. These experiences and the extensive network he has established with his colleagues and society members allow him to serve them well in the continued growth of our society.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Successfully organized ICRA2024, as well as ROBIO 2011, ROBIO 2021 and CYBER2014 as the General Chair
• Developed a new copyright release format for recording and distributing excellent talks of 2017 ICRA-X, 2017 ICRA Plenary, and Keynote Talks as the content of the RAS Youtube Channel, and continued contributing to publishing Plenary and Keynote Talks for ICRA2018, ICRA2019, ICRA2020, IROS2020, ICRA2021, IROS2022, ICRA2024, and many contents on robotics educations.
• Collaborated with RAS ESPB AVPs and member team, contributed to improving RAS web pages, enriching official social media channels, successfully achieving the project of local language caption for education video, and establishing a volunteer education framework for RAS social media services.
• Served ROBIO2007, ROBIO2008, ICRA2011, AIM2011, IROS2013, ROBIO2015, ARSO2016, ROBIO2017, ISR2018 as Program Chair and Program Co-Chair
• Served as Publication Chairs for 27 IEEE conferences, majorly sponsored by RAS, including IROS2005, IROS2006, ICRA2009, ICRA2014, ICRA2017, IROS2017, IROS2019, ICRA2021, IROS2022, ICRA2023, ICRA2025

POSITION STATEMENT

If elected as an AdCom member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), I will dedicate my best efforts to supporting the operation of our society. I aim to actively engage with the membership and assist the RAS President and Vice Presidents in fulfilling their mandates to provide the highest quality services to our members. I will work to promote RAS activities and broaden the society’s influence, particularly in countries experiencing rapid growth in RAS membership in recent years. Additionally, I will collaborate closely with fellow AdCom members to continually enhance the quality of RAS-sponsored conferences, with a focus on conference organization, publication standards, and addressing emerging challenges. Lastly, I will contribute to the development of strategies aimed at increasing industrial engagement and participation in the society
