Nancy Amato Elected to Serve as 2026-2027 RAS President

We are pleased to announce that Nancy Amato, Head of the Computer Science Department and Abel Bliss Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was elected by the RAS Administrative Committee (AdCom) to serve as the RAS President for the 2026-2027 term. Professor Amato will serve as President-Elect during Professor Aude Billard’s 2024-2025 term as RAS President.

Professor Amato has served in a variety of roles previously with RAS, including on the RAS AdCom and Executive Committee (ExCom) as well as with RAS-sponsored publications, conferences.

Nancy M. Amato is Head of the Computer Science Department and Abel Bliss Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She received undergraduate degrees in Mathematical Sciences and Economics from Stanford, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from UC Berkeley and the University of Illinois, respectively. Before returning to her alma mater in 2019, she was Unocal Professor and Regents Professor at Texas A&M University and Senior Director of Engineering Honors Programs.

Amato is known for algorithmic contributions to robotics task and motion planning, computational biology and geometry, and parallel and distributed computing. Her honors include the inaugural Robotics Medal in 2023, the 2019 IEEE RAS Saridis Leadership Award in Robotics and Automation, the inaugural 2014 NCWIT Harrold/Notkin Research and Graduate Mentoring Award, and the 2014 CRA Haberman Award for contributions to increasing diversity in computing. She is a Fellow of the AAAI, AAAS, ACM and IEEE.
