Low-Cost 3D Printing Technology and Applications

ABSTRACT: Although 3D printing has been an engineering tool for more than 20 years and there are now more than 30,000 systems in the field, it has only been three years since the introduction of systems and kits low enough in cost to be considered for general consumer applications.
Building and operating a low-cost 3D printer has been the initial project of the recently formed Forsyth Technical Community College IEEE Student Club. The engineering experienced gained from this "hands-on" project includes; CAD enabled design, CNC encoding, embedded microcontroller programming, mechanical design, materials selection, and component resourcing.
The presenters will provide a demonstration of a working system, technical details of the project and technical details of current applications that benefit the public. The Q&A portion of the presentation promotes direct technical involvement by the audience.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS: Markus Parker received his AA degree and is an adjunct professor for the CET and EET, Computer and Electrical Engineering Technologies, department of Forsyth Technical Community College. Markus has taken a technical lead implementing the 3D printer student project at FTCC and is passionate in using the technology for the benefit of society.
William 'Jason' Dunn is the president of the FTCC IEEE Students Club and the instigator of the 3D printer as a first project for the club. Jason is additionally an active member of the Winston-Salem based Fab Locker 'hacker space' which has been developing and producing 3D printers and 3D printing techniques for the past two plus years.
