The topic of the webinar was “Cyber system security” and the purpose  was to analyze the various threats to our cyber system and to discuss the ways of protecting our systems from various security threats. On May 10, Prof. Sandeep Shukla led a discussion with numerous participants on this important topic.

The speaker started sharing the slides and started the webinar by defining the complex networks and how computers are connected for sharing data. He further discussed the issue on digital transformation, Industrial and critical system. He discussed about the operational technology graph on SANS 2019 state of OT  ,a graph on OT attack trends for the year 2019.Discussed on various actors involved in OT

He discussed various cyber attacks on Ukraine, India and Saudi Aramco. He also discussed on Covid Lock ransom ware which exploits malicious android applications, Generic model of cyber physical system and cyber vulnerabilities

The webinar was informative and information was also given on ways to protect our system and the use of graphs in the slides helped in better understanding of the topic

The webinar was attended by 350+ participants from 9 different regions which includes students, delegates and working professionals. Towards the end of the session Suraj Jaiswal asked the students to clear their doubts.

Maria Pia Fanti (IEEE Fellow) received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 1983. She was a visiting researcher at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York, in 1999. Since 1983, she has been with the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the Polytechnic of Bari, Italy, where she is currently a Full Professor of system and control engineering and Chair of the Laboratory of Automation and Control. Her research interests include discrete-event systems; Petri net; consensus protocols; fault detection; management and modeling of complex systems, such as logistics, production and healthcare systems. She has published +270 papers and two textbooks on these topics. Prof. Fanti was General Chair of the 2011 IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering and of the IFAC Workshop on Dependable Control of Discrete Systems 2009. She is Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Automation Science and Engineering and Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. She is member at large of the Board of Governors of the IEEE SMC Society and of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, Co-Chair of the Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems of the IEEE SMC Society, and of the TC on Automation in Logistics of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.

Event Summary

The purpose of the webinar on “Digital Manufacturing” was to analyse the concept and application domain of this topic considering the increasingly established Industry 4.0 and other technologies. On 9 May 2020, Dr. J. Ramkumar (Professor, IIT Kanpur), led a discussion with numerous participants on this interesting topic.

Speaker defines Digital Manufacturing as an integrated approach to manufacturing that is computer-based system comprised of simulation, 3D visualization, analytics and collaboration tools to create product. Further, he explained its evolution from initiatives like Design for Manufacturability (DFM). Computer-integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Flexible Manufacturing and Lean Manufacturing.

He outlined Industry 4.0 as a new technological paradigm, leading to a transformation of Manufacturing system and described its pillars such as Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, IoT, etc. He further illustrated Smart Manufacturing that employs CIM, adaptability, information technology, and more flexible training.

He also described Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning in detail, how they work, their application and how they are interconnected.

The webinar was full of facts and information about interesting technologies. The use of fascinating diagrams in the slides grabbed everyone’s attention and made the webinar more intriguing. The webinar was attended by 125+ participants including people from foreign countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc.

At last, doubt clearing session was held where attendees asked their queries. The event was a success. Overall, the feedback, received was overwhelmingly positive.

Event Summary

The purpose of “Introduction to IoT and Smart Robotics” was to engage the community to get aware of this trending technology and get a motivation to start their journey in this field as this technology is used to develop Industry 4.0 solutions. On 2 May 2020 , Mr. Suraj Jaiswal (Chair of IEEE RAS-PSIT), IoT and Robotics enthusiast, led a discussion with numerous participants on this interesting topic.

Speaker describes the Internet of Things(IoT) as the network of physical objects, consists of sensors/devices which work through cloud connectivity. Further, he tells about the smart robotics where robots can collaborate with humans, working along-side them and learning from their behavior. He describes the working of these things in detail.

He also discussed Industry 4.0, defined as “the intelligent networking of machines and processes in industry with the aid of information and communication technology”. This industrial revolution is shaped by physical and digital trends. He outlined various applications of IoT and Smart Robotics and how they can be useful in future. The increasing networking of people and machines with the internet is leading to the enhancement of new business models.

At last, there was a doubt clearing session in which the attendees asked their queries. The event was a success. Overall, the feedback, received was overwhelmingly positive.

The recently-founded Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Chapter from São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo (EESC-USP), Brazil, organized starting from 18 September until 27 November the Robotics and Automation Reading Group.

The recently-founded Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Chapter from São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo (EESC-USP), Brazil, organized a round-table on 7 November 2019. The event, designated as “Automation and Labor Market: the engineer’s profile for the upcoming industry”, took place at São Carlos School of Engineering, in one of the Electrical Engineering Department buildings, from 7pm till 9pm. It was the first RAS Chapter event aimed to the campus’ undergraduate and graduate students. The event was focused on discussing what are the key characteristics of an engineering professional in Brazil nowadays and what the labor market expects from them. To improve the discussion, four engineers from different backgrounds playing very distinct roles professionally were invited. They were:

● Mr. João Soares, a former student from EESC-USP, who works in the Human Resources Technology company Kenoby;

● Prof. Dr. Bidinotto, current Professor at EESC-USP and former Flight Test Engineer at largest Brazilian aircraft company EMBRAER S.A.;

● Mr. Rovilson, electrical engineer working with automation at one of Grob Group’s subsidiaries in Brazil;

● Mr. Polegato, a PhD candidate at EESC-USP, with past experience in the field of agricultural robots at Naïo Technologies, in France, and also a RAS Member.


Around thirty people attended the event. One of our RAS Members, Mr. Noppeney, lead the discussion, in order to cover a regular amount of topics and to restrain the discussions within the preset timespan. This way, the event could be more dynamic and encourage the public to engage in the discussion regarding the topic with which they felt more comfortable. At the end, there were beverages and snacks, so the participants could have one more chance to engage in discussions with the invited engineers or with each other.

Among the feedback surveys distributed at the end of the event, 18 were completed accordingly. The feedback was strictly positive, with a few remarks regarding room temperature, event location and time for discussion. The event was the first initiative of the EESC-USP RAS Chapter towards the campus’ community and was considered a success by its members and the participants of the event.

Introduction on Multi-Robot Systems: Challenges in the Next Future

Abstract Multi-robot systems have been a research topic for a long time and are now becoming a reality in several application areas. The importance of having a methodological approach to handle such a system is due to the different challenges that are needed to be faced to make them work in a real environment with some flexibility. Fundamental concepts, approaches, applications and future challenges will be described in the talk.

Lucia Pallottino is currently Associate Professor at the Centro di Ricerca "E. Piaggio" and the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione at the University of Pisa. She received the "Laurea" degree in Mathematics in 1998 and a Doctoral degree in Robotics and Industrial Automation in 2002. She has been Visiting Scholar at M.I.T. (2000-2001) in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS ). She has been Visiting Researcher at UCLA, (2004) in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department (MAE ).

She is (or has been):

- Deputy Director of Centro di Ricerca "E. Piaggio" (since Jan. 2017);

- Responsible of the CrossLab in Advanced Manufacturing (2018-2020);

- Co-founder of Proxima robotics srl and X-Star motion, Spin-offs of the University of Pisa;

- Chair of the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society Italian Chapter (I-RAS) (Jan. 2015- Dec. 2018);

- Senior Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (since 2020), Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems (Since 2021) and of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (Since 2021) , Associate Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (2017-2020) and of the IEEE Transaction on Robotics (2014-2017).

She is Principal Investigator of the DeCAIR Erasmus+ European project and scientific collaborator in the DARKO European project. She has also been Principal Investigator of the ILIAD European project and Scientific collaborator in the WALK-MAN European project. Her main research interests within Robotics are in motion planning and control, optimal control, coordination of multi–robot systems, distributed algorithms.

The IEEE Robotics and Automation (RAS) Student Branch Chapter (SBC) from the Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil, has translated to Portuguese a book about the python programming language. The book which was chosen was the open source “Python for Everybody” by Charles Severance.

The activity was suggested by one of the SBC volunteers, which led the group to get in touch with the author of the book. After that, a team of volunteers were set up to accomplish the translation. The main goal of the project was to make programming material more accessible for Brazilians, since there are not as many materials in Portuguese as in English about the subject.

Along with that goal, we could also see some evolution on the project team of volunteers. As they translated the material, they were able to improve their English skills, and they would also understand the theme of the book, which was the Python language. Thanks to regular meetings and an organized strategy for team development, benefits were promoted inside and outside the IEEE community.

One year after the start of the project, the book translation was finished with a 100% retention rate from all the volunteers who participated in the project. Since it is an open source book, it can be found in the author’s github repository page, such as the IEEE RAS UFCG website. There is also a printed version of the material, which can be purchased through Amazon.
