The RAS chapter of the IEEE University Student Branch El Bosque focuses on learning projects, is constantly innovating and seeking activities to transmit knowledge about technology and robotics. This chapter currently has 7 active members and a counselor who contribute to see the chapter grow. As we move into 2020, we reflect on some of the projects this RAS student branch chapter has been involved with over the past year.

IEEE RAS has more than 220 Local and Regional Chapters active around the world. Among these activities, local RAS chapters sponsor or cosponsor minisymposia, student competitions, and continuing education workshops. Local RAS chapters also provide valuable professional contacts, especially for engineers who may have few co-workers who are robotics or automation professionals.

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) is seeking applications for the Member Activities Board’s Student Activities Committee (SAC). There are openings for one chair and one or more co‐chairs. These positions offer great opportunities to learn more about the Society, have an international impact, and expand one’s professional network. The chair will serve for two calendar years (2020 – 2021), and the co‐chairs for a one‐year term in 2020 and renewable for a second year.
The IEEE‐RAS Student Activities Committee promotes student participation in the Society activities in co‐operation with all Society Boards, Committees and Working Groups, under the supervision of the Member Activities Board. The mission of the committee includes working on issues of interest to student members and interacting with student members and student chapter branches. Current areas of focus include:
- Lunch with Leaders held at flagship conferences (ICRA, CASE, IROS)
- Fun, informal social events at RAS sponsored conferences
- Educational webinars
- Membership development
- SAC Website and social media content
- Coordination with student branch chapter chairs
- SAC column in IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine (quarterly publication)
Description of Roles:
Chair: The Chair will be responsible for managing the SAC and its efforts. The Chair of the SAC will be one of 23 voting members on the RAS Administrative Committee (AdCom). The Chair is expected to attend semi-annual Administrative Committee meetings, held in conjunction with ICRA and IROS conferences. Travel support of up to $2500 USD is provided by the Society to attend these meetings. The Chair shall also serve on and report to the Member Activities Board.
Social Media Co-Chair: This co-Chair is responsible for managing electronic communications as they pertain to SAC-organized activities. This will include maintaining an online presence as well as making announcements on social media platforms to promote the Society and the activities of the SAC.
RSR Coordinator Co-Chair: This co-Chair will be the primary channel of communication between the Regional Student Representatives (RSRs) and the SAC, as well as various Student Chapters directly as required. They are also expected to promote communication between various Chapters in the Society and assist RSRs when necessary. The co-Chair is also expected to work with the RSRs to highlight student chapter activities for the IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine (RA-M) Chapter and International Activities column.
RA-M Co-Chair: The Society publishes the IEEE Robots and Automation Magazine every quarter, and the RA-M co-Chair is expected to contribute, collect or solicit reports or articles for RA-M to write the Student’s Corner column. Topics are open-ended but typically focus on current and relevant issues in robotics and robotics education.
Conference Event Co-Chair: This is a more fluid role that exists to help coordinate or organize events or volunteers during ICRA, IROS, or CASE. This individual will likely be expected to work closely with conference Organizing Committees to accomplish various tasks, e.g., organizing student-led Tutorial sessions.
Candidates may be undergraduate or graduate students, but must be student members of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in good standing. The ideal candidate has strong social, professional, and communication skills, is willing to take part in ongoing activities and propose new initiatives. Past participation in SAC is requested but not required. There is no geographical preference.
Currently, the SAC has several initiatives to promote active networking, interdisciplinary dialogues, and robotics education. Some initiatives require weekly SAC involvement while other activities are conference specific (currently developed around the RAS flagship conferences: IROS, ICRA, and CASE). Interested applicants should be:
- Self-motivated
- Organized
- Responsive to email discussions
- Able to commit 5+ hours a week to SAC material, potentially more when required for specific activities (e.g. reviewing volunteer proposals, organizing conference activities, etc.)
If you wish to be considered, please complete an Application Form by 10 January 2020 and indicate whether you are applying for the Chair or Co-Chair position (please specify one or more co-chair positions): and include the following information:
- A letter indicating applicant’s interest in serving on the SAC and relevant experience (2 pages maximum)
- A CV or résumé (2 pages maximum)
- A letter of support from a faculty member at your college or university (preferably a current member of IEEE and RAS).

RAS-UEL is an IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Student Branch Chapter formed by students of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the State University of Londrina, Brazil.
The chapter held a barbecue for all members, to network, celebrate, and present all the activities performed by the chapter throughout the year.
One project that was recognized at RasDay-UEL 2019 was The OttoBots Project which seeks, through use of child-friendly robots, to bring joy to sick children in hospitals. This year, 9 Ottos were developed that range from simple (armless models made in laser cutting machine) to more complex models (OttoAranha made in 3D printer). In addition, the project impacted more than 9,000 people, from education professionals, children diagnosed with cancer, and students from various schools in Londrina.
RAS-UEL appreciates all the help provided by the sponsors and the volunteers' willingness and commitment to the project.

The IROS 2020 Organizing Committee is looking for a motivated graduate student volunteer to organize Tutorials for IROS 2020 in Las Vegas (25 -29 Oct). This is a highly-visible, core organizing role that requires initiative, excellent organizational and communication skills, and good time management.
The selected candidate will be required to:
• Determine ~10 Tutorial topics, as suggested by the student population in general. Online poll data suggesting various popular topics is already available and includes such topics as “Soft Robotics”, “Tensorflow in Robotics”, “Introduction to ROS”, etc. Further polling should be conducted in a timely manner to narrow down desired topics.
• Recruit ~10 students, each responsible for chairing 1 Tutorial session during IROS 2020 on one of the topics as determined by online poll above. Each of these students would be responsible for recruiting and identifying Tutorial speakers for their assigned Tutorial session, as well as organizing the agenda for their Tutorial.
• In general, provide high-level supervision of the IROS 2020 Tutorial sessions and their assigned student chairs.
The timeline for this position begins now and ends approximately after the conclusion of IROS 2020 on 29 October 2020. The selected candidate will begin immediately with the goal of recruiting ~10 tutorial chairs completed around mid-August, and a list of confirmed tutorial speakers (provided by each of the ~10 student Tutorial chairs) around the end of August.
Interested applicants should:
• Have experience organizing or volunteering in medium-to-large size events
• Be familiar with previous tutorials at RAS conferences, preferably ICRA and IROS
• Be currently pursuing a graduate degree (preferably a PhD, although MSc students will be considered)
Students interested in this position should email the IROS 2020 Program Chair, Paul Oh, at paul.oh@unlv.edu, using the subject line [IROS 2020 Tutorials] and CC Megan Emmons (mremmons@rams.colostate.edu), Senior Chair of RAS Student Activities Committee. We invite PhD students as well as post-doctoral candidates with the relevant research background to apply for this spring school. Exceptional students pursuing relevant Masters degrees are also very welcome to apply. Submissions will be considered through following criteria:
- Relevance of the research field.
- Impact of the school in the researcher's career.
All applications should be submitted as a single Portable Document Format (PDF) file using the following guidelines. Submissions will be evaluated on quality as well as relevance to the workshop's theme.

Participation fees for the event is 1300 USD. This includes registration, accommodation, meals as well as coffee or snacks. The facilities of the venue are shown in the images below. We would like to thank our funders that enabled us to keep this amount to an affordable level. In cases of exceptional applications requiring additional support, some scholarships would be available. The details of the money transfer as well as scholarships would be announced by Nov 21, 2018.
Guidelines for applications:
In order to be considered for the school, the applications must include following files (combined into one file). No other documents would be necessary.
- Curriculum Vitae: A two pages or less of CV detailing relevant aspects of the candidate's academic career that demonstrates her/his relevance to the school theme.
- Research Abstract: A 200 word research abstract that the candidate intends to present during the school.
- Letter of recommendation: A short letter from the academic advisor or the employer of the candidate supporting her/his application.

Many of you may have heard about the exciting night life in Madrid. It's one of the best in the world, and the Robotics and Automation Society has organized an event on Tuesday, 2 October, for those of you who would like to experience it!
In keeping with usual Spanish tradition, we will be exploring various tapas bars throughout the night---and they're open very late! Food will be covered by RAS, although you'll have to purchase your own drinks.

The Eighth International Summer School on Screw-Theory Based Methods in Robotics

The 2017 Summer Screws will be held on a new continent, Australia, and in an unusual month, December. Yet, the time and place could not be more appropriate. It is the beginning of the Southern summer, as befits a summer school, in a time window immediately after IFToMM ISRM 2017 (theInternational Symposium on Robotics & Mechatronics) and right before ACRA 2017 (the Australasian Conference on Robotics andAutomation, the premier yearly robotics event in the region), both held in Sydney.
The location, Monash University, and Australia, is uniquely significant for our core subject. It is where nearly 50 years ago Kenneth H. Hunt and his collaborators revitalized and updated screw theory and started applying it to the emerging field of robotics. As a special feature of the 2017 edition, a number of local guest lecturers, including Kenneth Waldron (Stanford and University of Technology Sydney) and Marcus Pandy (University of Melbourne), will talk about the history of screw theory in Australia and the special
role played by Kenneth Hunt, whom they knew well.
Like every year, Summer Screws 2017 will gather a selection of our regular lecturers, all recognized experts in the robotics applications of screw theory, and up to 40 participants at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia from 2-10 December. The school will teach attendees how to apply existing methods and
empower them to develop new ones in their own research. The basic theoretical notions will be introduced in a rigorous manner, with emphasis on examples, applications, and exercises. As usual, invited speakers from the region will briefly present current and recent work.

Goals
Autonomous robots are becoming progressively more sophisticated, thanks to the availability of affordable technologies and robust algorithms for perception, control and learning. These technologies are building blocks for the development of systems with cognitive capabilities, able to operate effectively outside controlled environments.
The aim of this school is to give students an overview of the state-of-the-art on the broad field of robotics and teach them the required, practical, skills that allow them to program robots taking advantage of available tools and libraries for perception, control and machine learning. We propose to use humanoid robots are testbeds, because they offer unique opportunities to study many of the problems that are relevant to the field of autonomous systems.
Format
The school is organized as a set of theoretical lectures followed by hands-on sessions using simulators as well as real robots. Students will be challenged with a set of practical assignments and a final project to be carried out in small groups. A set of evening talks by renowned researchers in robotics will complement the main school activities by exposing students to the latest results in the field. Two iCub humanoid robots will be available to the students, equipped with a cluster of computers and GPUs in a dedicated LAN.
Participants are expected to have a background in robotics and computer programming in C/C++. They should also bring their own laptop to attend hands-on sessions.

IEEE RAS is excited to announce the Access to Talent Program which will be organized in conjunction with IEEE/RJS IROS 2017. The EXPO which accompanies the IROS conference is targeted at the robotics industry, providing an excellent opportunity for employers to showcase their company and to conduct on-site interviews with prospective employees. Building on this conference staple, the Access to Talent Program is aimed at better connecting companies with job-seeking roboticists.
Conference attendees interested in participating in the Access to Talent can upload their contact information and resume/CV to a database which will be made available to sponsoring companies. Interested companies then have the opportunity to conduct on-site interviews or may follow up with prospective employees. If you are interested in participating, go to the IROS Careerfair website and click on the "Create Account or Reset Password" link where you will be asked to provide an email address. Further instructions on setting up a password will be sent to you so you can complete the log-in process. Once you have logged in, click on "Create" and fill out the application as instructed.
IROS Gold and Silver level companies will have access to the database one week before the conference while other sponsors, exhibitors, and career fair companies will receive access to the database at the beginning of the conference. Companies can search the database for potential employees and will have access to conference space to conduct on-site interviews.

The results are in for the inaugural Student Activities Committee (SAC) Scavenger Hunt Challenge!
Students attending ICRA 2017 in Singapore had the opportunity to participate in a fun picture scavenger hunt. On the first day of the conference teams of 2-3 students were emailed a "secret" list of photo challenges. Throughout the five day event, teams took photos of each other demonstrating their achievments. Tasks ranged from shaking hands with RAS leadership, visiting local sights near the conference venue, to doing funny poses.
